Both numbers have been found to be way off. When Clawson's first book came out he stated that blued examples could be found up to about 780,000 and in the third edition he states 760,000 serial number range. Anything blued after that was made up by someone starting with a parkerized example to start with. After that serial number range they would all be parked. NickNick, Any blued Colt A1 much above maybe mid 734,000 would not be legit. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable people here can be of more help. All this is my opinion and labled as such. My collection is based on pistols made in 1943 so,some of this is academic to me. The presence or lack of the hardening may effect value based on the theme of ones collection. Colts with the serial # under the firing pin stop helps to make identification easier for those of us with less experience but the experts can tell either way.Hardening of the front of the slide started on Military pistols in 1936 and the slidestop notch started to be hardened in Feb. Swampdog, I am but a neophyte compared to the real experts here but, generally speaking,I think most collectors would value an earlier Colt above later ones because they were blued as opposed to parkerized.
